Linkage between Physical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science

Physical chemistry is to deal with the Matter. Its behavior on atomic and molecular level and how chemical reactions occur. Physical chemists are focused on understanding the physical properties of atoms and molecules, the way chemical reactions work, and what these properties reveal. Physical chemists often work closely with materials scientists to research and develop potential uses for new materials also based on the analyses, physical chemists may develop new theories, such as how complex structures are formed. It is very important to use sophisticated instrumentation and equipment in physical chemistry such as analytical instruments, which can include lasers, mass spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance, and electron microscopes etc.

Physical Chemistry has its role in the development of drugs in the field of Pharmaceutical Science. With the emergence of Physical Chemistry in drug discovery the measurement of physic-chemical parameters for many compounds is required at a much earlier stage of the drug discovery process. Lipophilicity, Solubility, Acid–Base character, and Electrochemical redox potential these are the Parameters measured using the applications of Physical Chemistry. These properties can be used both in modeling absorption, distribution, and cell permeation, and in the structure-activity relationship correlation to help design active compounds. The solubility parameter becomes crucial in the later stage of drug development such as in formulation.
