Herbal medicines are gaining importance throughout the world in the field of
Healthcare. Herbal medicine is used to
treat many conditions such as eczema, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual
syndrome, fibromyalgia, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, migraine,
chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and cancer, among others.
Conventional drug therapy is regulated extensively than herbal medicines in
many countries including the U.S. National Center for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) Conducted a Survey in 2007 showed that 17.7 % of
adults have used natural products (primarily herbs) in a period of one-year.
Worldwide it is estimated that 80% of the population uses herbs and most of the
herbal products are used by U.S countries.
At present, there are so many researches exploring the use of herbal
medicines, especially in clinical trials. Both pharmacokinetic and
pharmacodynamic processes plays an important role in herb-drug interactions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the global market is
approximately US $83 billion annually. In some of the countries, marketing and
sales of some herbs are driven primarily by profits. However, in other
countries, herbs are used as cost effective products which can serve as a major
way of curing certain conditions or diseases. Potential benefits and risks of
Herbal medicines can be understood by the worldwide standardization and
adequate clinical trials.
